History of TAG Heuer

If you are looking to become a TAG Heuer expert or you are familiarising yourself with the iconic brand for the first time, you are going to need to know how to properly pronounce TAG Heuer. TAG is an abbreviation for ‘Techniques d’Avant Garde’ and is pronounced as it is read, and Heuer is pronounced as “Hoyer”.

Where and how are TAG Heuer watches made?

TAG Heuer has a watchmaking workshop in Cornol, Switzerland and a watchmaking factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The company has in-house designers, mathematicians, and production and quality engineers who combine their skills to reinvent the principles of watchmaking.

All TAG Heuer watches are put under pressure and put to the test before being sold. Each timepiece will face shocks and extreme force as well as freefalling, water resistance and accuracy tests to prove they’re un-scratchable, unbreakable and of the highest standard. TAG Heuer undertakes 300 new watch projects per year. It takes between 12 and 18 months to validate a complete design prototype and just 1 week to create a complete product model.

For many years (and no doubt many more to come), TAG Heuer has been a leading watch manufacturer. With these luxury watches, you are sure to have an aesthetically pleasing, and highly functional timepiece that will last you a lifetime.

TAG Heuer features

TAG Heuer watches are crafted on a foundation of quality features, here are some of the premium features commonly found across the versatile TAG Heuer range.

Chronograph

Chronograph watches combine a standard watch display with a stopwatch feature. This often means that the watch has an independent sweep second hand that can be started, stopped, and returned to zero with the use of a button.

Chronographs are lauded for their accuracy.

Sapphire crystal

Sapphire crystal refers to the transparent cover that protects the face of the watch. Sapphire crystal is often seen as the premium material for watch face coverings as it is extremely strong, durable and boasts impressive scratch resistance.

You can find sapphire crystal across many of the TAG Heuer range.

Screw-down crown

A screw-down crown is a threaded winding crown that screws tightly to the case ensuring water resistance and preventing dust from entering the device.

Usually featured in watches with supreme water resistance, a screw-down crown is more than suitable if you are planning on taking your watch out on the waves.

Tachymeter

The tachymeter is a scale that can often be found inscribed around the outer rim of watches, often also featuring the chronograph feature.

TAG Heuer watch care and maintenance

Owning a TAG Heuer watch can bring you all kinds of excitement. Whether you’ve treated yourself or have been gifted this new luxury watch, you’re going to want to get the very best out of it. To ensure your watch stays in top condition, read our handy tips on all things care and maintenance.

How long will a TAG Heuer watch last?

When following the right TAG Heuer maintenance and care instructions, your watch can last you a lifetime and more. Of course, regular battery changes (quartz models only) and watch services will be needed to ensure you get the most out of your watch. As long as these are done, and you take care of your watch in terms of cleaning and storage day-to-day, you should have a watch that lasts you a very long time.

Do TAG Heuer watches hold their value?

Luxury watches like TAG Heuer are more inclined to hold their value well over the years due to the quality and valuable materials of the watch. TAG watches are also reliable and continue to maintain good time which is another factor as to why they’ll hold their value. However, whether or not your TAG watch will hold its value, will ultimately depend on how well it’s looked after, and the model purchased.

TAG Heuer service

To make sure your watch remains in optimum condition, it’s crucial a service is carried out by an expert. As a rule of thumb, you should service your watch every 2 years. At Ernest Jones, our highly skilled, on-site technicians can service and maintain your timepiece to the highest standard. A service on your TAG Heuer entails your watch being completely stripped, with all components thoroughly cleaned. Having the movement of your watch cleaned by a specialist rather than yourself is necessary to prolong the lifespan of your watch. Opening your watch leads to it becoming exposed to dust and dirt that can damage the movements, so unless trained in doing so, you should always leave this to a specialist.

How to clean your TAG Heuer watch

Another factor that contributes to keeping your watch in good working order is to make sure it’s cleaned frequently. We’d recommend cleaning your watch every 2 to 3 months.

If your TAG watch is water resistant, ensure that the crown is fully pushed into to prevent any water getting inside, and make sure the seals have been tested within the last year (this will take place at the service of your watch). If the crown is fully pushed in and seals are maintained, wash your watch in soapy water, using a soft brush. Once washed, rinse your watch and dry with a soft cloth. If in doubt about the water resistance of your watch, clean it with a soft brush to prevent the possibility of any damage.

Whenever your watch is exposed to salt water, remember to rinse straight after with fresh water and dry. Fabric, leather, alligator or python straps should never be exposed to water as they can become damaged and fade in colour.
