Born of desire

DKNY was founded in 1989 and acts as little sister to the high fashion of the Donna Karan Collection. Born of Donna Karan's desire to design for her daughter, DKNY is named after New York (Donna Karan New York).

A brief history

Donna Karan was born in 1949, in Queens, New York. She grew up in Long Island and trained at Parson's School of Design, entering the business herself designing for Anne Klein. From designing for this legendary American leisurewear designer, Donna Karan went on to run the company following the death of Anne Klein, afterwards launching her own range under the title Donna Karan.

Seven easy pieces

Donna Karan's design philosophy is based around the concept of 'seven easy pieces': combining seven items which can be used creatively to offer a variety of looks, offering affordable and adaptable fashion.

Clothes, jewellery and watches

Donna Karan has always insisted that she would only design clothes that she herself would wear. Her Essentials range and her line of elastic bodysuits won her instant recognition. The Essentials line offers seven easy pieces that every woman should have in her closet. The success of these early lines allowed Donna Karan to build one of the biggest brands in the world when she launched the DKNY range. Her empire has grown to encapsulate jewellery, watches and designer accessories as well as her famous clothes lines.
