Tolkowsky Diamond Dynasty
The Tolkowsky dynasty was born in the early 1800's and was founded by Abraham Tolkowksy. Abraham and his three sons moved from Eastern Europe to Antwerp and the seeds of this family dynasty were sown. Tolkowsky went on to revolutionise the diamond industry and the art of diamond cutting.
The Ideal Cut
Marcel Tolkowsky was a mathematician and physicist who combined his inherited skills as a diamond cutter with his scholarly skills. Gaining a PhD from London University in diamond engineering, he went on to invent the Ideal Cut diamond.
Diamond Design
Unveiling his thesis on the proportions of a cut diamond in 1919 Marcel Tolkowsky set new standards for the world of diamond cutting. His groundbreaking observations about light in diamonds were outlined in his book, Diamond Design, offering a mathematical and optical analysis of what was to become known as the Ideal Cut diamond.
Diamond Excellence
These parameters fundamentally changed the design of diamonds, bringing forth a fire and brilliance formerly hidden in the heart of the stone. Tolkowsky name remains synonymous to this day with unsurpassed excellence and the Ideal Cut remains the benchmark for the diamond industry.
De Beers Centenary
In more recent times Tolkowsky has had the honour of cutting the De Beers centenary diamond, an amazing 599 rough diamond which, when cut, presented 247 facets and weighed 273.85 carats. Acknowledged as the largest, most colour perfect and flawless modern diamond it is the pinnacle of seven generations of brilliance. In 1991 Gabi Tolkowsky bought The Centenary Diamond to London and personally presented the stone to Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.
Golden Jubilee Diamond
Tolkowsky also designed and cut the Golden Jubilee diamond, which is the largest faceted diamond in the world. Presented to HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand to celebrate his 50 years on the throne. This glorious stone presents 148 facets and weights 545.65 carats and has a yellow-brown colour intensified by the brilliant cushion cut.
