Pearls have been a source of fascination for centuries. They have been considered the most magical and feminine of all gems and are the only one created by a living organism. Due to their unique beginnings pearls emanate a warmth and glow not found in other gems and have come to symbolise fidelity, commitment and love.
Pearls, the birthstone for June
Pearls are a wonderful gift and as the birthstone for June they represent modesty, chastity and purity. Anyone born in the month of June will love receiving pearl jewellery as a gift and will treasure it forever. Birthstone gifts can be given on any occasion, including Valentine’s Day, weddings and birthdays.
Where do pearls come from?
Pearls are formed when a piece of sand, or something similar, finds it way into the body (shell) of a mollusc. The mollusc then protects itself by coating the intruder with layers of calcium carbonate and conchiolinan aragonite. These layers overlap and develop into the beautiful and shiny gems that adorn pearl earrings, pearl pendants and pearl jewellery.
Cultured pearls
Natural pearls are rare and valuable. In order to meet the demand for pearl jewellery a technique has been developed which produces cultured pearls. Cultured pearls are created by artificially placing the "intruder" into the mollusc and leaving it to develop into a pearl over 6 months to 4 years. Most pearl jewellery today features these cultured pearls.
Freshwater and black pearls
Some cultured pearls are made in freshwater mussels, usually in lakes and rivers in China and America. These are called Freshwater Pearls. Black pearls come from the black-lipped oyster found in the South Seas, in particular around Tahiti. Despite being called black pearls they come in many different colours. Freshwater pearls can be dyed to effectively imitate black pearls.
No better time to buy pearls
With 25% off selected jewellery at Ernest Jones, now is the best time to buy pearl jewellery, pearl pendants or pearl earrings for that special someone in your life. Whatever the occasion pearls are a wonderful way to say, "I love you".
