What sets luxury watches apart from the rest? Answer: Exceptional craftsmanship and outstanding features. Our watch specialist, Scott, knows everything there is to know about the technical wizardry behind these timepieces thanks to his expertise behind the counter at EJ Lincoln and his unfaltering passion for how these masterpieces tick – and we can see exactly why.
For this feature, we’ve asked Scott to talk all about the Bremont Supermarine. Want to know more about this exquisite timepiece? Read on for all details.
What’s the best feature of a Bremont Supermarine?
Bremont may have barely reached its teens (it was founded in 2002), but already it's found the sweet spot between aviation and adventure – as its timepieces aptly demonstrate. Priding itself on being the supplier to Her Majesties Armed Forces, which means its watches have to pass rigorous testing before being cleared for duty (tests that the Supermarine has passed with flying colours), it is flying the flag for British watchmaking, and we put it to you that it's one of the most creative in Europe.
Which type of movement powers the Bremont Supermarine?
Bremont, while being a proud British brand, recognises that the best movements come from Switzerland. The Swiss-made automatic movements used in the Supermarine are modified by Bremont to achieve chronometer certification, ensuring the levels of accuracy you've come to expect from luxury timepieces. The Supermarine can also come with extra complications, like the GMT or chronograph models, which are a vital tool for today’s global travellers. Each one has an additional hand that can be set to GMT or another time zone and a rotating bezel that displays the 24-hour clock so you can monitor up to three time zones. Also known as UTC (Universal Time Co-ordinated) or ‘Zulu’ time, Greenwich Mean Time is used as the standard international reference time for communications, military, maritime, aviation and other activities. Whatever you call it, with a Bremont GMT watch on your wrist, you always know what time it is elsewhere, wherever you happen to be
What is the Bremont Supermarine suitable for?
Thanks to Bremont’s roots as a brand inspired by aircraft and pilot’s chronometers, the Supermarine is a combination of a diver and a pilot watch. It's because of this, that the watch is more sports-oriented, pairing well with the rougher and tumble clothing of hikers or the streamlined gear of swimmers. However, it's also great with smart casualwear, working well with jeans and shirt for everyday aviation enthusiasts, and joggers for a more laid-back look.
What makes a Bremont Supermarine a must-have for watch enthusiasts?
There are very few British watchmakers out there (especially ones with Bremont's pedigree). In an industry dominated by big Swiss brands, Bremont's unique selling point is its history (albeit still in its infancy). It might be young, but it captures the essence of historical horology with ease and expertise, with its military-inspired roots taking centre stage. For example, the Supermarine takes its name from the Supermarine Spitfire fighter planes of World War Two, connecting the sea and air with refined elegance and quality that you'd expect from a brand with a much longer history.
What’s the best way to care for your Bremont watch?
Bremont prides itself on the 'ruthless' testing of its watches. In other words, the Supermarine is made to withstand a rigorous workout and come out the other side ready for more. Depending on wear and tear, the leather will need extra care and attention (which we can help with) but in the meantime enjoy it as it ages naturally for a well-worn (and loved) vintage look. What else could tell your story better?
What’s your favourite Bremont Supermarine design?
Cliché or not, black goes with everything. The black dial and bezel of the Supermarine 301 give it a striking appearance, while the bronze highlights give it warmth and, some would say, a vintage feel. Pair all of this with the black rubber strap and the watch takes on a retro-cool come powerful explorer vibe.
