Sourcing Conflict Free Diamonds
Conflict free diamonds are those that have been sourced and acquired in a way that is respectful of human rights. Through legislation, lengthy processes and transparency in the supply chain, we are helping to successfully stop the flow of conflict diamonds, which are used by rebel movements to finance war and terrorism.
We implement very detailed policies to ensure transparency with all our suppliers when it comes to diamond sourcing. This includes all diamonds whether they are loose, rough or polished, as well as diamonds set into finished jewellery.
Our Responsible Sourcing Journey
In 2000, we became a founding member of the World Diamond Council (WDC) and have since been striving to maintain better standards in the diamond sourcing industry. From launching global events and educating suppliers on the risks of undisclosed laboratory-grown diamonds to launching a public website to facilitate compliance, we constantly aim to educate, train and improve the industry as a whole.
We developed the SRSP – Signet Responsible Sourcing Protocol – a set of rigorous, best practice sourcing standards to ensure our supply chain is free of any contribution to conflict or human rights abuses. Our SRSP goes beyond the legal requirements and is a process of continuous improvement.
More recently, in 2020 we celebrated the 15-year anniversary of the Responsible Jewellery Council with the launch of the Sustainable Development Goal Taskforce, and in 2021 we joined this taskforce as well as joining the UN Global Compact – the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative tackling human rights, labour, anti-corruption and environmental issues.
The Kimberley Process
Founded in 2002, the Kimberley Process is an international certification scheme that regulates the commercial sale of diamonds. It forms part of the Clean Diamonds Trade Act (CDTA), which requires all imported diamonds to have a Kimberley Process certificate, helping to reduce the flow of conflict diamonds.
The Kimberley Process relies on the contributions of its participants in 82 international countries and offers a set of minimum requirements that each participant must meet. It is underpinned by the United Nations mandate and is backed by the leading civil organisations.
Our Due Diligence
As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure responsible diamond sourcing, we adhere to a five-step guidance process to ensure due diligence is practiced from conflict-affected and high-risk areas.
The steps include establishing strong company management systems, identifying risks in the supply chain, implementing strategies to respond to the risks, supporting third-party audits and reporting annually on supply chain due diligence.
Natural Diamond Assurance
As a retailer, we are responsible for sharing accurate information about natural diamonds and laboratory grown diamonds to all our customers. To maintain the integrity of the natural diamond supply chain we launched Project ASSURE, in partnership with De Beers and the Natural Diamond Council, to reassure our customers that the diamonds they are purchasing are of 100% natural origin.
We distinguish between natural diamonds and laboratory grown diamonds using special detection equipment and verification instruments under the ASSURE standard. This gives our customers complete peace of mind and confidence when buying from us.
Our Diamond Warranty
All rough and polished diamonds bought or sold by Ernest Jones include the System of Warranties statement developed by the International Diamond Manufacturers Association, the World Federation of Diamond Bourses and the WDC:
“Any natural diamonds herein supplied have been purchased from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict and in compliance with United Nations Resolutions and corresponding national laws. The seller hereby guarantees that these natural diamonds are conflict-free and confirms adherence to the WDC SOW Guidelines.”
