WHO IS VERA WANG?
Wang attended Sarah Lawrence College in New York and during her summer break, worked at Yves Saint Laurent on Madison Avenue. It was there she met and impressed the Vogue fashion director, Frances Patiky Stein, who two years later upon Vera’s graduation, arranged for her to interview at Vogue. Wang was initially hired as an assistant, but shot up the ranks and became the magazine’s youngest ever fashion editor. After over 15 years at Vogue, Wang left to pursue her next step as Design Director for Ralph Lauren.
AN ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER IN FASHION DESIGN
In 1989, while planning her own wedding, Wang found herself disappointed with the narrow and unimaginative range of designs for the modern woman. Ever practical, she decided to create her own dress and from necessity came a design philosophy that would showcase drama, intricate detailing and her contemporary, highly original approach to fashion design. Wang’s love for couture resulted in her opening her first bridal boutique in the exclusive Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue in 1990, where she quickly began to cater to lovers of high-end luxury, including celebrities and socialites.
Wang’s illustrious design career has since gone from strength to strength, and the Vera Wang name is now synonymous with outstanding bridal fashion.
