In celebration of the 50 years since receiving NASA’s Silver Snoopy Award, OMEGA debuts the launch of their brand new Snoopy Speedmaster. Discover how this collectable watch tells the incredible story of Apollo 13, and the history of the fascinating partnership between OMEGA and NASA.

In 1970, OMEGA received the prestigious “Silver Snoopy Award” from the astronauts at NASA. The prize recognised OMEGA’s unique contributions to space exploration, as well as the Speedmaster’s role in saving Apollo 13. The exceptional Snoopy Speedmaster timepiece has now been created in the occasion’s honour.

The special connection between Snoopy and NASA first started in the 1960s, when writer and illustrator Charles M. Schulz created comic strips depicting the lovable anthropomorphic beagle on the moon. Those animations captured public excitement about mankind’s adventures into space, and consequentially established Snoopy as a symbol of exploration.

In 1968, NASA introduced Snoopy as the face of its safety programme - not only would he act as a safety watchdog, but the mascot also represented total mission success, while keeping things light in serious situations. To celebrate this, NASA also introduced the Silver Snoopy Award that same year, which is today awarded to NASA employees and contractors for outstanding intent and spirit of Space Flight Awareness.

So how did OMEGA come to receive such an illustrious honour in 1970? Although Apollo 13 is a mission which is deemed as the most successful failure of all time, NASA presented the Silver Snoopy Award to OMEGA following their critical contribution in successfully returning the Apollo 13 astronauts home safely.

Due to an oxygen tank exploding onboard two days after the space shuttle’s launch, the crew were forced to move into the Lunar Module. As this craft was not built to support so many people for such a long period of time however, the astronauts were forced to shut down nearly all power to conserve energy.

Apollo 13 faced many serious challenges over the next several days, as NASA tirelessly worked around the clock to overcome the increasingly volatile situation. Due to the mission having drifted off its intended course, it meant that the module would re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at the wrong angle and bounce back into space with no chance of recovery. To manually readjust the course of the craft, an exact 14-second burn of the engine was required – this is when OMEGA’s mechanical excellence was called on. There was simply no room for error. Without their digital timers, the crew instead used their OMEGA Speedmaster chronographs to time the burn. To everyone’s relief, the manoeuvre worked perfectly and saw Apollo 13 landing safely back on Earth on April 17th.

The Apollo 13 mission in 1970 best represents OMEGA’s precision, and the safety that Snoopy was entrusted with which this new release commemorates the 50th anniversary of that very award.

The Swiss watchmaker had been an invaluable support to NASA ever since the OMEGA Speedmaster was declared “flight qualified for all manned space missions”. The chronograph was subsequently trusted by all the astronauts throughout some of their most important hours, and even became the first watch worn on the moon in 1969.

From that moment, the Snoopy and OMEGA stories were forever entwined, and the two have forever shared a special journey through the years – and the stars.

Exactly 50 years later, a special timepiece has been created in the occasion’s honour. Combining animation with watchmaking art, this incredible Snoopy tribute has taken the OMEGA Speedmaster to new realms of design.

The new 50th anniversary Snoopy Speedmaster is presented in the classic 42mm stainless steel Speedmaster Professional case, although it houses upgraded functions that have recently been introduced by OMEGA. The watch has a silver dial, blue PVD angle-shaped hour markers and hands, and a total of three blue sub dials, which all contribute to its sharp aesthetics.

Showing OMEGA’s superb attention to detail, the watch’s blue nylon fabric strap matches the other blue elements of the watch, and even features the trajectory of the Apollo 13 mission, embossed on the lining. This strap is attached to a 42mm case in stainless steel, which is inspired by the first watch worn on the moon in 1969. The tachymeter scale, with the iconic “Dot over Ninety”, is shown in white enamel on a blue ceramic [ZrO2] bezel ring.

It’s no surprise that Snoopy makes a prominent appearance in this model, and that’s where the fun really begins! The playful beagle has been embossed on a silver medallion, happy dancing on the sub dial at 9 o’clock. For added sentiment, Snoopy has been designed wearing his famous spacesuit, in the exact style of the silver pin that NASA astronauts give to award recipients.

On the caseback, Snoopy appears in animated form as he takes a trip into orbit, thanks animated black and white Command and Service Module (CSM) on a magical hand. When the chronograph seconds hand is in use, Snoopy takes a trip around the mysterious far side of the moon, with the lunar surface being decorated on the sapphire crystal using a unique micro-structured metallisation. In the distance, a vision of our home is included. This Earth disc rotates once per minute, in sync with the watch’s small seconds hand to symbolise the precise rotation of the Earth. The iconic quote “Eyes on the Stars” is included within the black universe.

This exquisite collectable timepiece comes with OMEGA’s full 5-year warranty. The watch is beautifully presented in its own Apollo 13 presentation box, accompanied by a microfiber cleaning cloth, a detailed brochure, and a magnifying glass to help you get up close to the details.
